SPS Tucson Salon:  To Bear Witness, A Conversation

Directions: From Swan and Grant, East on Grant, South on Rosemont, Left on E. Farness

Description: As clinicians, we empathically engage with many people who have been wounded by trauma -- the experience of unbearable, unendurable, overwhelming affect.   We attempt to provide a relational home in which trauma can be responded to and held safely, and we are professionally responsible for bearing in confidence what we hear.  But what is the cost to us? In what ways might our own traumatic histories and suffering be triggered?  To what extent are our own organizing schemas, affects, flesh and bones, behavior, relationships, and spirituality altered by what we absorb?  Our selves can be cumulatively, profoundly, and forever transformed through our work.  Bob will address issues secondary traumatic stress, vicarious traumatization, and compassion fatigue,  burnout, and  self-care.  Please bring an example of your experiences working with traumatized patients, its effects on you, and how you cope.
