Mission Statement

The Arizona Center for Psychoanalytic studies is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the promulgation and study of psychoanalysis.  There are numerous expressions of this mission, for example:

·        Providing qualified individuals the opportunity for the systematic study of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy and by and awarding them certificates upon completion;

·        Supporting activities that enhance public and scientific interest in psychoanalysis as well as educational and research programs in psychoanalysis;

·        Collaborating with other mental health disciplines and with other organizations with similar interests;

·        Providing a forum for psychoanalysts and psychoanalytically minded individuals to present their work;

·        Establishing and nurturing a psychoanalytic a culture by a variety of means is seen as essential to this undertaking. Such a culture provides a context within which the previously mentioned values and endeavors may flourish.

 

Integral to the mission is the spirit with which it is carried out. This spirit is exemplified by the way candidates and students are invited to participate in the functioning and administration of the Center by participating on the Board and various other committees as colleagues. Training itself is viewed as a collaborative effort with candidates having highly valued input in what is taught and how it is taught, as well as in all other aspects of the training process. Accordingly, there is an anti-hierarchical sense of mutuality that pervades relationships between analysts and candidates.

 

In keeping with a spirit of openness, ACPS eschews orthodoxy and welcomes all significant viewpoints in psychoanalysis. Within this milieu candidates are encouraged to develop their own voices by integrating theory and practice in their own creative synthesis.
